Time Management Principles to Boost your Productivity.

👋Hey Friends!

Welcome to “Not So Secret”, a didactic blog, where two dudes Naveen and Hari from Tamil Nadu, share about books, productivity, and lifestyle.

In this post, we gonna explore the Time Management Principles to Boost your Productivity.

Parkinson's law

Parkinson's laws state that: "Work expands to fill the time that we allocate". which is proposed by Cyril Northcote Parkinson in the 1950s.

Let me explain, If I got an assignment and the due date is tomorrow evening, then I take the whole time from now to tomorrow's evening to complete the work, because I allocated the whole time to complete the work. If I take a month to complete a work, I allocated the whole month to do it. but the actual reality is we do the work a few times before the deadline, it's true. TBH, I did many times when I was in junior secondary. What if, I created an artificial deadline? mhm, interesting. yep, I can do the work within 3hrs instead of doing it for the whole time.

Pareto principle

This is called The Pareto Principle and is widely known as the "80/20 Rule". This rule applies literally to everything in our life. so what does it states? "80% of the results, comes from 20% of the effort".

You just need to figure out what is the 20% content of any tasks which gives me the 80% of my output. When we realize that our 80% output is controlled by 20% of our input we can hack the analogy of doing the 100% unwanted thing. As you may ask, what about the remaining 20 from the 100 is just the icings on the cake.

This applies to everything in our life, just find our what is the 20% which gives the 80% of the result.

First Law of Motion

So Newton's first law of motion applies very nicely to productivity as well.

Newton:

it states that: If an object is at rest or in a constant velocity, it tends to be in that state unless an external force is acted on it. It means if something is still, it stays still if something is in motion, it will continue to move at a constant velocity by default unless an external force is acted. And applying this to productivity, If we are not doing anything we need some external force to push us into the work. But if we are moving any way we don't need any external force to keep us moving. We all experienced this, it is hard to start something and harder to continue doing something.

So, How to hack our brains to get started?

Hmm, it is pretty simple and I use this many times when I don't feel like doing it. and that is, The 5 minute Rule. I set a timer just for 5 minutes and I say to my brain that I'm just gonna do it for 5 minutes and I can think about doing it so. when the timer goes off, My brain got a little bit of training to love what I do and continue doing.

So Thank you for Reading up, Stay Productive.
